The Benefits of DRY BODY BRUSHING

Posted on December 29, 2012

Years ago as I was studying and experimenting with different holistic approaches to my personal health I ran across information on Dry Brushing. Basically you brush your skin while it is dry and it removes dead surface skin cells, eliminates toxins by stimulating the blood flow, unclogs your pores and makes it easier for your healthy healing skin treatments (like shea butter) to nourish and moisturize your skin. It also helps to get rid of cellulite (bonus !!!) You can perform this once a day to see all the benefits that it can offer (or up to twice a day if you prefer) Your skin will glow and as the largest organ on our body, perform better. As we go about our daily lives and run into pollutants in the air and toxins we ingest, this is a great way to slough off all the unwanted impurities and start fresh. For the best benefits always brush in the direction of the heart. When you have finished brushing, follow up with a warm shower or bath , rinse with cool water and apply your favorite moisturizer (again shea butter is awesome !! )

To start you will need……

A natural bristle brush with a long handle (Makes it easier to reach all those hard to reach places like your back )

Starting at the sole of your feet brush gently to cover the entire sole

Gently brush the top of your foot working your way up to the ankle and then the knee.

Starting at knee gently brush up. On the inner thigh use gentle strokes because this is a delicate area.

On outer thigh (where cellulite often appears) brush gently in an upward motion.

Repeat on other leg

Using gentle strokes on the torso making sure to brush over the liver (on the left side of your body under the breast bone) The liver is the bodys detoxifier and dry brushing help to eliminate the toxins

Finish off by brushing the arms and hands always in the direction of your heart

Having a refreshing glass of filtered or distilled water is a great way to make sure you thoroughly rid your body of any excess impurities.

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling for a healthy you

Oil pulling is a long used healing therapy used in Europe, India and China. By swishing oil in the mouth for 20 minutes, it pulls out toxins and heals the body from the inside out. You can use coconut oil, sesame oil, olive oil or any other edible oil. This is a simple practice that you can do daily that will detox the body and help speed up your metabolism. All you will need is:

The oil of your choice (coconut, sesame, sunflower any edible oil)

A timer

A tablespoon

The best time to oil pull is first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

Pour one tablespoon of the oil into your mouth

Set the timer for 20 minutes

Swish the oil around in your mouth without swallowing. Move it around in your mouth, through your teeth like mouthwash. No need to gargle and try not to swallow because it will be full of the bacteria and toxins you are trying to get rid of.

As your 20 minutes comes to an end and the mixture in your mouth has gotten thicker, you can spit the oil/saliva mix in the toilet (if you spit in the sink it might clog up the drain when it solidifies)

Finally rinse out your mouth with warm water a couple of times and brush your teeth.

This should be done daily for maximum health benefits.

Some other benefits to oil pulling are:

•Migraine headache relief

•Correcting hormone imbalances

•Reducing inflammation of arthritis

•May help with gastro-enteritis

•Aids in the reduction of eczema

•May reduce symptoms of bronchitis

•Helps support normal kidney function

•May help reduce sinus congestion

•Some people report improved vision

•Helps reduce insomnia

•Reduced hangover after alcohol consumption

•Aids in reducing pain

•Reduces the symptoms of allergies

•Helps detoxify the body of harmful metals and organisms

Sassy Water !!

Sassy Water Ingredients

I’m in love with Sassy Water !! I found this great, healthy refreshing and tasty water on AskNaturalWoman.webs.com and I love it !! At first I was skeptical with the ingredients, but it turned out so great, I drank it all in two days, by myself!! Sassy water has cucumbers, ginger and lemon added to make it a super detox and a super yummy drink. Try it and let me know what you think, You will be HOOKED !!

8 Cups Distilled water

Grated Ginger (1/3 cup)

1 medium cucumber

1 lemon sliced

Fresh Mint Leaves

Add all the indredients in your container of choice and let steep over night. Drink and enjoy!!

Ginger -Ginger can help alleviate diarrhea, aid digestion and reduce flatulence. Ginger can also help lower cholesterol and prevent blood platelets from clumping together. It also stimulate the circulatory system. Ginger may also be beneficial in the prevention of heart disease and cancer, as well as in the treatment of diabetes

Cucumber-The dark green skin of a cucumber is filled with important nutrients like vitamin A. Vitamin A is a powerful nutrient for eyesight and is beneficial in keeping your eyes and skin hydrated. Cucumber skin is high in fiber, which aides digestion and helps prevent colon cancer. It is also high in potassium, silica and magnesium.

Mint-The refreshing taste of mint makes it an ideal remedy for bad breath. Mint tea made from the fresh or dried leaves helps get rid of the odor-causing bacteria in your mouth. It will also keep your mouth moist by stimulating saliva production. The stimulating scent of mint can ease the symptoms of stress by inducing a sense of calm.

Lemon Water-Lemon and water both have clarifying effects on the body. By drinking lemon water daily, you are helping your body to flush away harmful toxins. Lemon water stimulates the elimination of toxins and waste products in your liver, helping to purify your digestive system. Because lemon juice is high in vitamin C, lemon water can be used to relieve the symptoms of asthma, allergies, sore throats and tonsillitis.Lemon juice is a diuretic. Lemon water, if consumed daily, can eventually help your body recover from urinary tract infections.Lemon water has detoxifying properties–aiding the body in losing weight. Drinking lemon water alone will not cause you to lose weight. Diet and exercise is key, lemon water only helps by flushing the body of toxins.

Plant Life

Plant Life !!

Everyone should have some kind of interaction with plants. Whether it’s in nature and long walks, growing your own, or welcoming them into your family as house plants. Plants offer stress relief as well as purifying the air and adding nutrients to the foods you cook. I have always had a green thumb, so to add some plants to my house was nothing new to me. I got the kids to help and we adopted two aloe plants. We also started an herb green house that we found for a dollar at the dollar store. We are growing cilantro, basil, thyme and rosemary. We do have other plants in the house that are great for purifying the air, and just bringing a feeling of calm and peace to the house. It is said that the energy and love you put into a plant will help it grow big and strong, and for herbs , that love energy will be passed along to your food. Invest in a great plant and make your house a sanctuary !! Grow LIFE !!

Essential ingredients for healthy cooking

Going through my cabinets I had to take stock of all the ingredients that would make my cooking healthier. I had to get rid of the processed foods, anything with MSG and sugary snacks. We added fresh fruits and vegetables, cooked healthier meals and drank more water and 100% juice. Some of the staples we have in our home are:

Agave Nectar:

Agave nectar, also known as agave syrup, is derived from the juice of the agave, a plant widely cultivated in Mexico. Agave syrup is typically composed of 90 percent fructose, though that percentage may vary according to processing methods. Its composition makes it less likely to cause the blood sugar spikes that occur after ingesting white sugar. Agave also boasts a sweeter taste than sugar, so you need less agave than sugar to achieve a comparable level of sweetness.

Sea Salt:

Sea salt not only provides enhanced flavor benefits, but it is healthy for the body. Unrefined sea salt contains over 80 mineral elements that the body needs. Because it is harvested and packaged in its natural form, it retains minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, iodine and manganese. It also contains electrolytes and other nutrients that are essential for enzyme production and for the maintenance of the body’s immune system. Unrefined sea salt easily replenishes the sodium and other salt minerals the body needs. Pure water and natural sodium can treat conditions such as muscle cramps, edema, gout and water retention.

Sea salt is favored in cooking because of its vibrant, pure flavor and its natural health benefits. It is available in various grain sizes, including coarse, fine and extra fine.

Red Pepper :

Cayenne pepper, part of the family of chili peppers, was first found in Central and South America thousands of years ago. During the fifteenth and sixteenth century, these peppers became popular in other region. Today, many people enjoy the hot, fiery flavor in a number of dishes. Cayenne pepper is an excellent source of vitamin A. Vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese and dietary fiber are also found within this spicy herb.

Bee Pollen:

The use of bee pollen as a health support tonic is mentioned in a range of ancient texts, including the Bible, Talmud, Koran and Book of Mormon. Sesame Oil:

Historically, sesame oil has been used as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and pain reliever in skin conditions, gum disease and a variety of other illnesses. Modern science now knows that sesame oil is a powerful antioxidant (a substance that reduces the presence of harmful chemicals in the body), high in polyunsaturated fats and an excellent source of vitamin E and minerals. Sesame oil, in fact, has the fourth-highest concentration of polyunsaturated fats of any oil. Polyunsaturated fats are important for cell growth and development and are especially beneficial to the heart. Polyunsaturated fats are also thought to be important in the prevention of illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis and autoimmune disorders. Because sesame oil is a natural, readily attainable source of these important polyunsaturated fats as well as its vitamin and antioxidant properties, it has begun to pique the interest of traditional Western medicine. Sesame oil has been the subject of multiple clinical studies and continues to be examined as a potential treatment for cancer, menopause, gum disease, high blood pressure and heart disease
